The user keeps asking, and each turn is a new chance to be cited.
What is Google AI Mode?
Google introduced AI Mode in March 2025 as an experimental search experience for harder questions. It expanded to more languages and more than 40 new areas in late 2025, and Google has continued adding newer Gemini models.
Instead of ten blue links, AI Mode gives a written response with links to sources, and the user can keep asking follow-up questions in the same thread.
How is AI Mode different from AI Overviews?
AI Overviews are short AI summaries that appear at the top of a normal results page for some searches. AI Mode is its own tab and is built for longer, conversational research.
Both draw on Google’s index, so the same basics apply: your page must be crawlable, indexable and genuinely useful.
Why does this matter for traffic?
Semrush estimates around 90,500 US monthly searches for “google ai mode”. Business owners are asking whether it will reduce clicks. The honest answer is that clicks may concentrate on fewer, more trusted sources.
That makes being the clearest source on a topic more valuable than producing many thin pages.
What does Google say site owners should do?
Google’s Search Central guidance on AI features says there is no special markup or file needed to appear. Normal SEO best practice applies: helpful content, good page experience, structured data that matches the visible page, and accurate business information.
Be wary of anyone selling a secret “AI Mode ranking” trick. Google’s own documentation does not describe one.
A practical checklist
Answer the main question in the first two sentences of each page. Add sections for the follow-up questions customers really ask. Show who wrote the page and why they are qualified.
Keep your Google Business Profile, prices and opening hours current. Then check Search Console regularly, because AI features traffic is reported inside normal web search data.
How fast will this topic grow?
Nobody can reliably promise that a topic will reach millions of searches in a set number of weeks. Search demand moves with news, product launches and policy announcements. The figures in this article are Semrush estimates for the US and Canada, so treat them as a guide to relative interest, not exact numbers.
A sensible approach is to publish a clear, sourced answer early, update it whenever the official source changes, and check real Search Console data before writing more on the same theme.
