AI Overviews and Zero-Click Search: A Dubai Business Guide

AI Overviews are changing search visibility. Learn how Dubai and UAE businesses can protect leads, rethink content and measure value beyond website clicks.

What do AI Overviews and zero-click search change?

A zero-click search ends without the searcher visiting an external website. AI Overviews are Google’s AI-generated summaries within search results, but zero-click behaviour predates them: featured snippets, knowledge panels and other results-page features also provide answers directly. The commercial issue is straightforward: a useful answer can satisfy a potential customer without bringing them to your website.

Similarweb reported in June 2026 that 68% of Google searches ended without a click. Separately, The AI Index’s August 2026 summary of Pew Research Center’s analysis reported traditional-result click rates of 8% when an AI summary appeared, compared with 15% without one. These findings indicate pressure on click acquisition; they do not establish an equivalent decline in leads or revenue.

As of 29 September 2026, the decision is not whether to abandon search marketing. It is whether your strategy still assumes that visibility automatically produces traffic. Separate three objectives: being found, being considered and generating an enquiry or purchase. Each deserves its own measures and investment decisions.

How should Dubai and UAE businesses interpret the data?

Treat the published figures as directional evidence, not a UAE performance forecast. The AI Index describes roughly half of US Google queries showing AI Overviews, while Similarweb reports coverage across more than 20% of all searches. These figures refer to different scopes and reporting periods; they should not be combined into a single Dubai benchmark.

Start with your own commercially important searches. For a hypothetical Dubai consultancy, these might include a broad definition, a service comparison and a request for a local provider. Review whether each result contains an AI answer, whether your business appears and what action a prospective buyer can take. Repeat in Arabic and English where those languages match your customers.

Distinguish informative answers from supplier selection. A business selling services across the UAE should test location-specific questions separately from general industry questions. Use the findings to decide which pages need clearer local relevance, which need stronger evidence and which simply no longer justify their production cost.

Which content should businesses fund or reduce?

Reduce investment in interchangeable explainers whose only purpose is attracting broad search traffic. This does not mean deleting useful introductory content. Instead, ask whether each page helps a buyer understand your offer, evaluate suitability or progress towards a decision. If it does none of these, updating it may be less valuable than improving a core service page.

Prioritise material that makes your business easier to assess: documented project examples, service inclusions, genuine pricing guidance, implementation processes, product comparisons and clear limitations. A Dubai professional-services firm could explain its discovery process and required client inputs. A UAE retailer could clarify product suitability, availability and return conditions. Publish only information you can substantiate.

Give visitors a reason to continue beyond a summary. Consider a useful assessment, a detailed specification, an appointment request or a quotation based on their requirements. The objective is not to conceal basic answers behind forms. It is to make the next step more valuable than rereading information already supplied in search.

How can you optimise for SEO, AEO and GEO together?

Treat search engine optimisation, answer engine optimisation and generative engine optimisation as connected workstreams rather than competing replacements. Build pages that answer real questions clearly, explain the business behind the answer and support claims with evidence. This approach serves readers and creates material worth testing for visibility in Google AI Overviews, ChatGPT and Perplexity.

Lead each important page with a concise answer to its main question. Follow with descriptive headings, relevant qualifications, supporting detail and a clear next action. Identify your organisation, services and locations accurately. Where useful, name Dubai or the relevant emirate rather than relying on vague references to regional coverage. Keep Arabic and English versions consistent where both are offered.

Make original evidence easy to identify: explain who produced a case study, what was measured and any limitations. Review whether important information is accessible on the page rather than available only through an enquiry. These are practical publishing improvements, not a guaranteed formula for AI citations. Test their effect before commissioning a large content expansion.

What should replace traffic-only reporting?

Do not replace one narrow metric with another. Website visits remain useful, but pair them with qualified enquiries, booked consultations, purchases and attributable revenue where available. Also track brand mentions and linked citations across a consistent set of priority questions. An AI answer mentioning your company is visibility, not proof that it caused a sale.

Create a repeatable review: record the query, platform, language, date, brand inclusion, cited page and accuracy of the answer. Track Google AI Overviews separately from other platforms. Review referral traffic alongside this record, and ask incoming leads how they discovered you. Treat self-reported discovery as supporting evidence rather than precise attribution.

Reporting capabilities need checking rather than assuming. Silverback Marketing reports that Google introduced new Search Console AI impression reporting in June 2026. Verify what is actually available in your account and what each measure includes before promising a dashboard. Where reporting is incomplete, disclose the gap and use consistent manual checks instead of presenting estimated exposure as measured reach.

Should you move SEO budget into paid advertising?

Not automatically. A decline in informational visits does not demonstrate that SEO has stopped producing profitable customers. Compare performance at page and intent level: are service-page enquiries falling, or is the loss concentrated in broad educational articles? Protect work that supports qualified demand while reassessing content that consumes budget without a clear business contribution.

Use Google Ads selectively to test commercially important searches, with explicit conversion tracking and spending limits. Judge the test on qualified lead cost and sales outcomes, not just clicks. Paid advertising should not become an unexamined replacement for organic traffic. Likewise, resist buying an extensive GEO programme whose deliverables are vague promises of AI visibility.

For a Dubai business with limited resources, consider reallocating effort before increasing spend: fewer generic articles, better service pages, stronger evidence and more disciplined measurement. Maintain other appropriate customer touchpoints, such as email and direct follow-up, so your acquisition plan is not evaluated through search traffic alone.

What should your next implementation cycle include?

Begin with a baseline audit owned jointly by marketing and sales. Identify the searches most closely connected to revenue, inspect their results and map them to existing pages. Record current enquiry quality and conversion performance. Agree what counts as a qualified lead before changing content, otherwise the team may celebrate visibility that sales cannot use.

Next, improve a manageable group of commercially important pages. Add direct answers, accurate service scope, credible supporting evidence and clear calls to action. Correct misleading or outdated claims wherever you find them. Brief your agency or internal team to report separately on completed work, observed search changes and actual commercial outcomes.

Finally, review whether the changes improved buyer understanding, qualified enquiries or relevant answer visibility. Expand the work that shows promise and investigate losses rather than assuming AI caused them. The operating principle is simple: make your business useful within the answer and compelling beyond it, while keeping investment tied to customer outcomes.

Frequently asked questions

Clear answers before we start.

01Does zero-click search mean SEO is no longer worthwhile?

No. Assess SEO by its contribution to relevant visibility and qualified demand, not traffic alone. Retain useful technical and content work while reconsidering generic publishing that lacks a commercial purpose.

02Are the published zero-click figures specific to Dubai?

No Dubai-specific benchmark is established by the supplied research. Do not apply US or broader search figures directly to UAE forecasts; validate exposure using your own queries and business results.

03Can my business guarantee inclusion in AI Overviews?

No guarantee is justified by this research. Clear answers, accurate business details and credible evidence are sensible improvements, but inclusion should be monitored rather than promised.

04Should we create Arabic content for AI search?

Create Arabic content where it serves your customers. Research their questions, maintain consistency with other language versions and evaluate Arabic search visibility separately instead of assuming identical results.

05Is an AI citation as valuable as a website visit?

They measure different things. A citation indicates answer visibility; a visit provides an opportunity for on-site action. Neither proves commercial value without evidence connecting it to customer consideration or conversion.

06What should I ask my marketing agency to report?

Request qualified enquiries, conversion performance, priority-query visibility, AI mentions and citations, plus reporting limitations. Ask the agency to distinguish observed results from assumptions and avoid attributing every traffic decline to AI.
